B’luru: The small things needed to activate cycling culture

Maya and Dult bikes partnered to create small but important comfort for cyclists on each ward
Encouraging a culture of cycling does not stop by making people start using a bicycle instead of a car or motorcycle.
In addition to creating cycling lines, often down to small comfort.
Ask Arjun Swaminathan.
The 44-year-old JP Nagar resident has cycled almost every day for the past two years.
His belief in the cycle has not been dipped even when normal traffic has returned wholeheartedly after the lock.
But the main worries of Swaminathan have found a safe parking lot for the cycle every time he removes vegetables or stops drinking coffee.
Like many cyclists in the city, he has no choice but to lock the bike to the Bescom pole or telephone pole.
Fed up with the lack of basic infrastructure to promote cycling culture in the city, Swaminathan has joined a new initiative by a group of cyclists who call themselves active council members for active mobility.
The program has not been launched to be conceptualized by the Mayor of Bengaluru bicycle, Sathya ongoing, in partnership with the Directorate of Tanah Urban transportation (Dult).

}

While the authorities saw providing a cycle-friendly infrastructure in this city, this group was seeking volunteers in each of the 198 wards, planning to do their bits at the environmental level.
They plan to hold two main campaigns: encourage small businesses such as retail stores or hotels to provide bicycles standing in their place and promoting cycling and running for short distances especially among students.
“Through this initiative, we hope to convince many business units such as retail stores and hotels to promise for green causes by providing a bicycle rack.
The Mobility Board will also help Dult in providing data on the condition of the path or scope to introduce the cycle pathway in their ward , “said Sathya ongoing, a resident of Sanjay Nagar.
Sankaran said such a program was conceptualized after several cyclists complained about the lack of safe parking facilities in the commercial area and business pursuing cyclists.
Arjun Swaminathan remembered that many theaters in the early 1990s had a cycle booth but that kind of bicycle friendly facilities gradually disappeared.
“Good bicycle costs are no less than Rs 15,000 but there is no infrastructure to lock the cycle in the commercial area.
Will not cost a lot to build u shaped shelves that can accommodate two bicycles.
Even many health shops do not have parking facilities for bicycles,” he said ,
Suma Arun Kumar, a resident of Sadashivanagar, began cycling regularly after the first wave of Covid-19.
The 44-year-old player, who initially cycled only around his house, now covers a distance of 40 km in stretch.
“I have cycled at least 10 km a day.
But there is no choice to park and lock the bike when it comes out to buy food.
Even the metro does not allow the cycle in his station,” he said.
V Mansanjula, Commissioner Dult said that they worked closely with cyclists to understand the problems and concerns faced by them in their environment.
“We will try to provide cycle friendly interventions based on the input they provide to us,” he said.
Dult, he said, currently survey various parts of the city to study the scope of introducing a new cycle line.
