Bengaluru: The number of people arrested for ownership, consumption, and dealing with drugs in Bengaluru saw a leap of 42% between 2020 and 2021 – from 3,673 to 5,208.
This increase was more than 300% since the 2019 pre-pandemic year, which saw 1,260 arrests.
The value of the banned substances that are confiscated – marijuana, brown sugar, opium, hashish, hashish oil, synthetic drugs (cocaine and other), MDMA & MDS, ecstasy, Yaba and LSD paper – see an increase of almost 149%, up from around Rs 21 Crore By 2020 to more than RS 53 Crore in 2021.
Compared to 2019 (RS 3.5 Crore), the leap is more than 1,400%.
In this three years, the police arrested more than 10,000 people in 7,651 cases involving nearly 8,500 kg of drugs.
According to official data, the police arrested 1,260 people and won 1.053kg of drugs in 768 cases reported in 2019.
In 2020, they arrested 3,673 and confiscated 3,912 kg of drugs in 2,766 cases, while in 2021, they arrested 3.512kg 3208 of goods Owned in 4,117 cases listed until December 14.
Sources say the actual number of drugs seized so far this year is 400kg lower than quantum by 2020, but the value is much higher with synthetic items and MDMA seized.
