Bengaluru: In terms of doctors who are rare, a 40-year-old woman has contributed her vital organs twice to her sick son in Bengalaru in the past 13 years.
The first transplant was in 2008 when his son, then seven years, was diagnosed with chronic liver disease.
His mother Swapna (name changed) was found as a suitable donor and he donated a portion of his heart.
He became the organ donor for the second time recently when his son, now 20, has no choice but to undergo a kidney transplant and he donates the kidneys.
The kidney transplant was conducted on September 11, 2021 and the duo of the mother-alright, said Dr.
Ishtiaq Ahmed, senior consultant – nephrology and renal transplant doctor, Narayana Health.
Both transplants are carried out in the same hospital.
Dr.
Ishtiaq Ahmed said taking more than one organs from a living donor and transplanting it to a single recipient was a rare phenomenon.
Father wants to donate a kidney but not suitable: Docswapna, who runs a tea shop near the Basaveshwara Nagar in Bengaluru, told Stoi the boy suffered through childhood and his decision to contribute was his task.
“My son suddenly began to swell in the stomach and vomited blood when he was seven years old.
He was diagnosed with a jaundice, but then found he suffered from chronic liver disease and liver transplantation was the only solution,” he said.
Mother is a suitable donor and submits to donate part of her heart.
The doctor took 300gms from his heart and transplanted it in an operation of 18 hours on August 23, 2008.
Even when the family was recovering from it, the boy’s health problem appeared again.
In 2017, there was swelling on his legs and weakness and he rushed to the hospital.
Detailed examination revealed that he suffered from the final kidney disease, progressive condition.
Although at first his condition was managed with drugs, he had to gradually shift to dialysis.
