BMC Review Mid-Monsoon Disaster Management

Mumbai: BMC held a meeting of mid-monsoon reviews from the city disaster management on Saturday.
Officials are directed at increasing the readiness and precautionary measures in the Mumbai landslide prone area.
“During the rainy season this year, coordination is well maintained among various institutions, and instructions are given to all related institutions during reviewing and coordination meetings to implement disaster management procedures more effectively,” said an official, addition.
Commissioner of the city of Ashwini Bhide, who heads the Suburban Mumbai District Disaster Management Authority is also directed at the implementation of more effective precautions in areas that are vulnerable to landslides.
“During the meeting, various things related to the remaining disaster management the rainy season,” the official was added.
Last month, 29 people died and six others were injured in two landslide incidents in the crew and vikhroli after heavy rains.
In both cases, BMC claims that they have issued a warning to non-moving residents.
Activists say that around 300 people living on the hillside have died in the past few decades and with heavy rain trends to be more intense every year, these residents live in increasing danger.
There are 50 deaths related to this year’s rain.
Most of them are caused by landslides and falling houses.
A 2010 A survey by Mhada and BMC slum improvement boards have revealed that close to 1 lakh family who lived on the slopes of Bukit Mumbai where around 22,483 were in a dangerous zone or vulnerable.
At present, some activists and experts suggest that around 1.5 lakh families live on the slopes, and thousands of families live in dangerous zones.
