BMC roots for electrical audits to make a must

Mumbai: After Blaze last week on the 60th floor of the floor in Curruey Road, where one person died, the City Fire Brigade would write to the State Public Works Department who asked him to hold a consultant panel that could conduct an electrical audit from a fully occupied building.
At present, Maharashtra Fire Act has no provisions for mandatory electrical audits.
Civil officials say that while the two-annually fire extinguisher audit can be mandated, electricity audits cannot be made obliged under the law and the PWD is the supervisory authority for it.
So, the authorities are checking whether the provisions for the same thing can be made in action.
RS3Crore proposal for ‘fire bikes’ which plans firefighters to be purchased approved at the permanent committee on Wednesday.
Officials said that 24 bicycles were proposed to be obtained, one for every civilian ward.
The bike will act as the first respondent because it will have a water tank attached to it.
The bike will help the fire brigade in responding to the fire incident, Bhide said.
A senior firefighting official said that 70% of the fire witnessed by the city every year was triggered by a short circuit.
The initial reason for Blaze in Avigna Park seems to be a short circuit, the official said.
At a fixed committee meeting on Wednesday, the Supplementary City Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, who was responsible for the Fire Brigade Department, said that currently there is no regulatory mechanism for electrical audits that must be carried out in buildings that have been fully occupied.
“We plan to write to PWD for the same thing, asking them to emergency consultants and therefore an electrical audit can be made mandatory.
The efficiency of fire management has risen but there is a need to control the fire at the initial stage itself.
As a precautionary step, we do artificial exercises And regularly check the building, “Bhide said, showed that in the case of Avigna Park, the fire extinguisher operational system but did not start when the fire erupted.
