Mumbai: 88-year-old Dental College Nair in Mumbai Central will get one of the biggest upgrades in decades.
A new 11-storey building that will accommodate more students, more operating cinemas, simulation labs and inpatient wards are almost complete.
It is hoped that it will operate early next year.
The Nair Dental College managed by BMC is the only Institute and other special teaching hospitals in addition to government college teeth, CST, to serve exclusively for city teeth needs.
The hospital records footsteps up to 3.5 lakh patients every year in the outpatient department on pre-covid days.
“Nair Dental is currently ranked third in India and we intend to take it higher,” said Suresh Kakani, an additional city commissioner, added that it could be inaugurated in December.
The project began in 2018.
Direct and most important results of upgrades were the BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) chair, said Dean Dr.
Neelam Andrade.
BDS is equivalent to MBBS in dentistry and college can increase the number of seats from 75 to 100.
“We have room now to accommodate 100 chairs and adequate infrastructure to support direct training,” he said.
It should be noted that the Institute has made a humble start in a stable in the Topwala National Medical College (BYL NAIR HOSPITAL) with a dental chair in 1933.
BMC officially took over the Institute in 1946.
The Institute was serving from a building 8 The floor was operated in 1951.
The new development project is being run at a cost of more than Rs 104 Crore.
This facility will have two modular operating theaters, three classrooms, mini-auditoriums and 25 beds.
The private environment with the installed toilet has also been made.
The isolation room has also been added to the setting for the first time.
Pre-clinical laboratories for teaching purposes, including simulation labs will be placed in new buildings.
Dr Andrade said that expansion would give doctors to strengthen Prakanker oral treatment, facial and jaw fractures, orbital fractures and jaw reconstruction.
“Despite smokeless tobacco prohibitions such as Gutka and Pan Masala, we continue to see a high number of pre-cancerous fibrosis, where the person has difficulty opening his mouth,” he added.
Andrade said that with metro connectivity came to the hospital door, the patient’s stream was only expected to multiply.
