Trichy: A stone hero from the 8th century was tracked in the village of Inamkulathur on the National Highway Trichy-Dindigul near Trichy by a group of archaeological fans.
There is no writing on the rock, but based on the style and design of the number carved on it, it is assumed that ‘veakerkal’ comes from AD-century 8th.
Bala Bharathi, a trichy-based archaeological fan that identified Hero’s stone, said that a man on a stone holding a bow and arrow in aggressive posture, showed that he was a warrior or village keeper.
The man has a short knife beside earrings, necklaces and other ornaments.
Stone measuring 3.5 feet and 2ft wide found near Mariamman Temple in Inamkulathur Village.
“Local people identify the stone as a villch (Bowman).
The stone must have been established in the memory of someone who died after showing the courage in protecting the villagers,” Bala Bharathi said.
Every day a full moon, the villagers offer prayers in stone heroes, he said.
A group of people migrated to Thogaimalai near Trichy City several generations before still having practices visiting the village to offer prayers on rock during special events.
A few years ago, similar hero stones were identified and documented in the village.
“Inamkulatathur was previously called Krishnasamudram and Vellankulakhur,” added Bala Bharathi.
In the Trichy district, a hero stone for bulls was identified near Thurayur recently.
