Belgrade: Asian medal five times Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) and debutant sumit (75kg) sailed to the pre-quarter-finals of the AIBA World Boxing Championship here on Saturday after recording the second victory in the second battle.
While Sumit beat Abdumalik Bactaev Tajikistan 5-0, Thapa, a former bronze medalist at the global exhibition, also won the round verdict against Sierra Leone’s John Brown in round 32.
Sumit opened the process for Boltaev, which did not lack intention but certainly not close to Indians when it comes to punching cleanly.
Sumit also faced warnings in the second half to hit Boltaev at the back of his head repeatedly despite being warned by the referee but the docking from one point did not have an impact on the control of the trial when he emerged as a winner who flooded.
Sumit will face Yoenlis Hernandez in Cuba in the pre-quarter-finals on Monday.
Thapa was the last to step into the ring for India that day, and it was too good for Brown, which did not lack spirits but was not in the application.
Experienced Indians slowed it carefully and connect the Jab and its own hooks well enough to keep the scoring cardnya in all three rounds.
He will go against Lounes Hamraoui from France in the last 16 stage on Monday.
However, Sachin (80kg), who got the first round bye, lost 1-4 to American Robby Gonzales in the last 32 contest.
The Indians rose for an intense battle in the opening round but finally ran out of energy against Gonzales, which used a long distance to be used well by stabbing Indian defense.
Also walking out was Govind Sahani (48kg) after he lost a dramatic pre-quarter-final against Georgia Sakhil Alakhverdovi.
Alakhverdovi fought apart from a blood-covered face after sustaining the wound above his left eye.
Sahani also docked the point in the final round because he failed to protect his head.
Sahani won the opening round at Split’s decision but lost the last two rounds against Georgia who was sandy to lose the 0-4 fight.
In a late night fight on Friday, Nishant Dev (71kg) strengthened to defeat Maururian Merven Clair 4-1 to also secure the place of quarter-final quarter-finals.
He will fight Mexico Alvarez Verde in the last 16 on Sunday.
Apart from Nishant, three more Indian boxers will compete in the pre-quarter-final stage on Sundays.
Asian Champion Sanjeet (92kg) will take Giorgi Tchigladze Georgia while Akash Kumar (54kg), who receives walkover in the last round, and narender (+ 92kg) will each face Puerto Rico’s Caleb Tirado and Jakhon Qurbonov Tajikistan.
The golden winner at the exhibition will run away with a $ 100,000 prize.
The silver medalist must be given $ 50,000, and both medalists will be given $ 25,000.
The total gift wallet stands above $ 2.6 million.
India is represented by national champions who rule throughout heavy categories.
