Rio de Janeiro: Brazil survived Gabriel Jesus’ loss to a red card at the beginning of the second half to beat Chile 1-0 in the thrilling Copa America tie on Friday and moved to the semi-final next week against Peru.
The host nation will play Peru, who defeated Paraguay at the penalty the previous day, at the Nilton Stadium Santos Rio de Janeiro at 5.
Other quarter-finals will be played on Saturday, with Argentina playing Ecuador and Uruguay facing Colombia.
Friday’s tie between the last two Copa America Champions is closer than those who come into the recommended game.
Brazil was unbeaten in 11 matches and rocked Group B, while Chile was only finished fourth in Group A and had drawn four of their last six matches 1-1.
After the first 45 minutes and without the first goal, the match was triggered in a few seconds from restarting, when substitute Lucas Paqueta worked with one-two making love with Neymar and then held Gary Medel to fire a house from close range.
However, the prospect changed less than two minutes later.
Brazil was reduced to 10 people after Gabriel Jesus was shown straight red for a terrible Kung-Fu kick that sent Eugenio MENA falling.
Brazil was not used to be under pressure, especially at home, but Chile forced them to the back foot for the most part of the second half when they poured forward.
Ben Brereton, the British-born striker who replaced Alexis Sanchez in the first round, crashed into a bar with a looping header and Ederson made at least two good rescue.
But Chile, winners in 2015 and 2016, cannot get goals and fall.
“We were beaten by favorites, the playing team at home,” said Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal.
“At least we will go with our high heads.”
