Rio de Janeiro: Brazil will suspend the Covid-19 vaccine contract worth $ 324 million who has President Ruges Jair Bolsonaro on allegations of irregularities, said Minister of Health on Tuesday, following the Federal Comtrroller, CGU guidance.
The agreement to buy 20 million doses of Covaxin Bharat Biotech shot has become a headache for Bolsonaro after the reporter of go public with alleged irregularities.
A health ministry official said he told the president about his concern.
Bolsonaro, whose popularity faded when the victim of Covid-19 Brazil rose past 500,000, has denied mistakes, by saying on Monday, he did not realize any irregularities.
But barbed questions refused to leave, and could cause problems for him ahead of the presidential election next year.
Brazilian Minister Marcelo Queiroga said at his team’s press conference will investigate the allegations during suspension.
“According to the Introduction CGU analysis, there was no deviation in a contract but, for compliance, the Ministry of Health chose to suspend the contract,” the ministry said in a statement.
Previously on Thursday, CNN Brazil reported that the ministry had decided to cancel the contract.
The Brazilian Federal Prosecutor has opened an investigation into an agreement, quoting a relatively high price, fast talks and delayed regulatory approval as a red flag.
It was also investigated by the Senate panel who investigated the handling of government pandemics.
One of the leading opposition senators on the panel filed a formal criminal complaint against Bolsonaro at the Supreme Court on Monday.
Randolfe Senator Rodrigues said he wanted the court to investigate “serious charges” and to find out why Bolsonaro “did not take any action after being told about the existence of a giant corruption scheme in the Ministry of Health.”
