Bride refuses to marry after groom turns up drunk at wedding in UP’s Pratapgarh

PRAYAGRAJ: A 22-year-old bride in Pratapgarh district’s Tikri village refused to tie the nuptial knot after the groom and several of his guests turned up to the venue drunk on Saturday evening.
Ironically, the groom in an inebriated state forced the bride to dance before the ‘jaimala ceremony’.
However, notwithstanding the bride’s decision, which they took as an insult, the bride’s family not only made the baratis including the groom and his sister captive but also asked to return articles which they had gifted while fixing the marriage.
Ironically, the groom’s family too approached the police seeking their help in getting the marriage solemnised, but the girl refused to change her mind.
Station house officer (Mandhata) Shrawan Kumar Singh told TOI, “ A farmer had fixed his daughter’s marriage with one Raviendra Patel of Kutiliya Ahina village during the lockdown.
He further added the girl’s father had made necessary arrangements for the ceremony, but as soon as the groom and his guests arrived at the venue on Saturday, the family members of the bride became suspicious over the activities of groom and his friends and found them in an inebriated state.
Initially, the family members ignored the circumstances, but the scene turned ugly, when the groom in a drunken state mounted pressure on the bride to dance on stage.
When the bride refused to dance, the groom created a scene and irked over his behaviour, the family members and others made baratis captive.
Upon being alerted, a team from Mandhata police station arrived on spot and tried to solve the issue.
The matter was, however, resolved only when the family members of the groom were assured to roll back gift items and cash which they had taken while fixing the marriage.
Bride’s family members claimed, “the groom and his friends continued to be sarcastic with the bride and her family allegedly under the influence of alcohol, the girl decided to call off the wedding.” Police said when the bride’s decision was conveyed to the groom’s family, they (groom and his family members) were still ready to solemnize the marriage but the bride took it as an insult to her and family members.
SHO, meanwhile, said “It was the girl’s decision to call off the wedding after she saw her groom inebriated and misbehaving with her and relatives.
Both parties later reached a compromise and the groom’s family agreed to return the gifts.
