LONDON: The British National Health Service builds a temporary structure in hospitals throughout the country to prepare the possibility of a surge in Covid-19 patients as a very contagious omicron variant triggering a wave of new infections.
The UK reported a record 183,037 confirmed the new Koronavirus infection on Wednesday, 32% more than the previous day.
While the initial data shows Omicron tends to cause serious illness rather than the previous variant, public health officials think the number of infections can cause leaps in hospitalization and death.
In response, the NHS will start preparing “Surge Hubs” this week in eight hospitals in the UK, each with the capacity to treat around 100 patients.
The staff are preparing plans to create as many as 4,000 “super waves” if needed, said NHS Thursday.
“We don’t know exactly how much of those who catch the virus will need hospital care, but given the number of infections that we cannot wait before we act, and rubber from today to ensure this facility is in place.,” Said Medical Director said.

The number of people in the UK who was hospitalized with Covid-19 increased to 10,462 on Wednesday from 7,366 on December 24, government figures showed.
Wednesday’s number was the highest since March 1.
The figure was still far below the peak of 34,336 recorded on January 18.
