Sofia: Daily Coronavirus infection in Bulgaria reached a record high of 7,062 on Wednesday, mostly driven by a very contagious Omicron variant, showing official data.
New cases, increased from the beginning of the year, surpassed the previous peaks regulated at the end of October, when the European Union member countries were at least vaccinatedly wrestling with Delta variants.
Viruses have killed 89 people in the last 24 hours in the Balkan country, according to official figures, bringing the total death toll to 31,761.
More than 5,200 people in hospitals, including 580 in intensive care.
In the capital, Sofia, the planned operation has been suspended as a hospital prepared to expand the ward for Covid-19 patients.
Health Authority said the inpatient surge could mean new restrictions.
At present, Bulgaria must wear masks indoors and public transportation and show graduating health, given to people who are vaccinated, recovering or those who have been tested negatively for viruses, to enter restaurants, cafes and fitness centers.
A new centrist administration who served last month has appealed to Bulgaria skeptical vaccines to be invested and offered one-time cash prize of 75 levis ($ 43.59) to retirees who choose to get fully vaccinated or take a booster.
In an effort to lead with an example, parliamentary members choose to make the health pass mandatory to enter parliament from January 24.
Government vaccine campaigns and surges in new cases have encouraged inoculation since the beginning of the year.
On Wednesday, more than 31,900 doses were given, carrying Bulgaria which was fully vaccinated to 1.95 million, or around 30% of the population.
Anti-vaccine protesters, organized by the Ultra-Nationalist Awakening Party, are expected on Wednesday to oppose health licenses, which they say to curb their rights and are back-door facilities to force vaccination.
