Kolkata: Police Police died and 13 others suffered injuries on Thursday when the bus carrying passengers crashed into a wall side by side with the Gate of the Fortress of William – Headquarters of East Command – with the driver lost control on the wheel, an officer said.
Minibus, who was heading for Howrah from Metiabruz, cut the police transmitted through the police before falling to the brick wall of the British era fortress near the hasting area at around 12:30 a.m., he said.
Vivekananda DAB, who was hired with Kolkata police reserve forces, was declared ‘taken dead’ by the doctor at the nearest SSKM Hospital, the officer said.
“We have to use a crane to pull it out from the bottom of the bus,” he explained.
The injured passenger was also taken to the government-managed SSKM hospital, and the conditions at least four of them were declared “critical”, the officer said.
“It seems like the brakes have failed, and the driver, in his offer to stop the bus fast, hit a tree and then the brick wall,” he added.
Police Commissioner Kolkata Mitra Soumen, who visited the accident site, said the problem was being seen, and more details would be available after a comprehensive investigation.
