PANAJI: More than 60 cases of cellphones robbed or lost reported from the Calangute-Candolim beach belt on New Year’s Day, and at least 16 suspects were arrested for trying to steal cellphones and other personal items, the Calangute police said.
A total of 65 cellphones were allegedly stolen, laptops, and RS 5,000 in cash were found from the suspect.
Calangute Pi Laxi Amonkar said the police took action after they received several complaints of cellular theft.
Personnel deployed in a certain location in the beach belt.
“During the investigation, it was found that male groups from Mumbai visited Goa every year during the New Year celebration to steal cellphones by utilizing a large crowd in Calangute.
On 2 or January 3, they returned to Mumbai and sell spare parts from the stolen phone,” said Amonkar.
Stolen cellphone owners are being identified and intimidated so that their cellphones can be returned in a quick legal process, said PI.
This was the first time the Calangute police traveled on 31 December pure to thwart cellular theft.
