Udhagamandalam: A male elephant calf was found dead in the Mudumalai Tiger (MTR) zone -core on Wednesday.
According to forest officials, they found the carcass of the calf of the elephant with several injuries at the reach of the Teppakadu forest around 9am on that day, when patrolling.
As an elephant herd has surrounded the carcass, the forest field staff could not approach him for more than three hours.
After the herd disbanded from that place, a veterinarian carried out an autopsy in the presence of members of NGOs, biologists and forest officials, said C H Padma, Deputy Director, the MTR-Core Zone.
Carnivore’s bite injury for a week was found in the right leg and animal stomach.
The rear leg bones are also cracked.
“Because of wounds and fractures, the movements are limited.
Also, the bowel calves are found empty, showing it does not have the right feed,” the officer said.
