Thiruvananthapuram: BJP has called for another special board, seventh in the past six months, above the threat of wild dogs in the city.
The Mayor of Arya Rajendran has denied permission for discussion on the same topic during the General Council meeting held in October.
The BJP Board protested in the council hall with placards and slogans after permission was rejected.
It was in the background of events at the General Council meeting that 35 members of the BJP Board had demanded a special board to be held on wild dog problems in the city.
Fixed health committees recently emerged under fire after animal lovers accused mismanagement and deviated in dealing with wild dogs in animal hospitals, Thiruvallom.
Animal welfare organization has filed a police complaint that alleged that wild dogs who underwent sterilization barely survive and were placed in the least hygienic conditions in a narrow cage.
The community feeder also came out in the protest against the corporation and said that they found many dogs disappeared at the hospital after the dog catcher took syalanya to sterilize.
Doubts are being thrown up to the survival rate of wild dogs posting operations.
The Committee of Health and Mayor Arya Rajendran has confirmed that sophisticated facilities will be arranged in Thiruvallom with a cost of Rs 4.5 Crore.
Civic’s body spent Rs 2.41 Crore to sterilize Rs 12,715 dogs between 2016-17 and 2021-22, according to the latest numbers presented in assembly.
Since 2016-17, the funds spent on the birth control of animals have increased phenomenally, from Rs 8 Lakh in 2016-17 to RS 73 Lakh at 2020-21.
There is also a proportional increase in sterilized wild dogs.
Citizens’ initiatives, collective animal lovers, said that reports have come from the caregiver of the community that sick sick dogs and hunger have been dying of terrible deaths in various parts of the city.
Citizens who visit the center have reported that dogs that are very sick and thin that are not feasible to undergo surgery are being sterilized or waiting for sterilization.
