New Delhi: The Forestry Department is saying a plan to move the growing population of Sambar Deer from Delhi Golf Club to Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary.
Officials said the camera trap had been installed at the club, where animals had lived for the past 20 years.
Delhi Golf Club has approached the forestry department with a request for relocation around three months ago.
A team of experts and veterinarians has assessed animal health, the department said.
“We are planning relocating in a safe way so that animals are not tense and stay healthy.
We have installed a camera trap because it is important to know their number first.
For now, we estimate it to anything between 15 and 30, but it can be more,” said A senior forest department official.
Officials said animals would be acclimatized before they were transferred to Asola Bhatt Sanctuary, where two deer sambar lived in their natural habitat.
“Because the deer lives in a closed area with a limit until now, they need to be acclimatized before being released with what will be the closest closeness to the wild.
After relocation begins, they will be stored in separate bases for some time before being sent to wildlife reserves,” he said.
According to a delhi golf club official, deer are mostly limited to 52 hectares of forest land.
“We believe it is a breeding population because we have seen some young walks,” he added.
Sambar, which is the largest deer species in India, has a dark brown coat and a pair of smooth horns.
It often lives in a spacious habitat, from the mixture to fall to dry and dry forests.
At present, it is registered as ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Nature Conservation (IUCN).
