NEW DELHI: Without any clarity provided by Padma awards scheme concerning reasons for cancellation of a Padma award and there is no precedent of an awardee being detained subsequently to get a heinous threat, the authorities is not likely to rush to a decision on whether to advocate taking the Padma Shri granted to wrestler Sushil Kumar, in opinion of his own murder taint. Kumar was arrested on Sunday for allegedly murdering fellow wrestler Sagar Dhankar at a battle. He faces charges of murder, murder, abduction and criminal conspiracy. The Padma awards scheme says:”The President could cancel and annul the award of this decoration to some individual and thereupon his name will be erased from the Register and that he will have to cancel the ribbon along with the Sanad. However, it will be competent for the President to reestablish the ribbon along with the Sanad and also to draw the orders of cancellation and annulment.” Kumar, who’s won two Olympic medals had been awarded the Padma Shri in 2011. A source stated that the MHA was captured of this matter and could take a suitable decision at the perfect moment. Former home secretary West Gopalaswami stated that if the MHA managed to talk about an overview of his Padma award suo motu, it might love to await a court order even if it’s in the chargesheet point — before recommending to the President of India to cancel and annul the award. “Following a chargesheet is submitted, the award could be cancelled from the President. And, if he’s acquitted after, the orders the award may be withdrawn,” Gopalaswami told TOI on Monday.
