Ludhiana: Chartered Accountants (CAS) and tax professionals from the city met Minister Punjab Chararjit Singh Channi on Thursday to demand the elimination of professional taxes from the country.
Fishing tax as a burden in public, CAS also told the minister’s chairman that tax did not meet the objectives of generating revenue for the state government.
Ca Vikas Goyal and Ca Samir Gupta, who led the delegation that met Channi, told TII, “Punjab State Development Tax (PSDT) or professional tax was brought by the Punjab Government in 2018 to collect additional income from those responsible for paying Income Tax.
Unfortunately, this tax awareness has never been taken seriously by the government and to date, except for some professionals, most of the population does not even realize this tax.
“Initially, the tax was less clear to the department of his demonstration and this problem was then diluted during Parliamentary elections in 2019, when many politicians including the legislature of the ruling party provide guarantees to the general public for the revocation of this tax, “they said.
“This situation leads to this non-initial tax payment by the general public.
Suddenly during March 202, the mass exhibition notification was received by people not to pay PSDT and hence punishment for non-registration and payment was applied,” said the CAS.
They requested that in the absence of general awareness and clarity in connection with the PSDT, as a measure of relief in the middle class population, the Development Tax of the Punjab state was canceled.
“PSDT is not a tax that produces very high income for the government and the general public, including senior citizens, considers it as an additional financial as well as the burden of compliance,” he added.
The delegation also demanded a one-time amnesty scheme for registration and submission of annual returns and requested that assistance must be given in the form of tax payments only and the interest and penalty must be abolished for delayed cases.
