There may be other drugs available for Covid-19 treatment in the future.
After a successful clinical trial of antivirus drugs, Umifenovir, for Covid treatment, scientists from the Central Narcotics Research Institute (CDRI) in the city trying to develop other drugs without side effects.
A team of scientists led by the Chief of Scientist Ravishankar was working on two combinations to provide the safest drug to the patient Coronavirus.
Safe! You have managed to throw your votelogin to see the results “Experts say that the combination of antivirus with different mechanisms can be more effective to fight virus pandemics.
We are working on two combinations – umifenovir with molnupiravir (antivirus) and umifenovir with niclosamide (anti-parasites),” Ravishankar said
Molnupiravur drugs only accept authorization of emergency use in India and abroad.
Although its use shows inpatient reduction during clinical trials, the biggest weakness is side effects, he added.
“Now, we are trying to maintain a low dose of molnupiravir in its combination with Umifenovir who can get rid of side effects such as the risk of cartilage and muscle damage.
If successful, it will make Umifenovir more effective in Covid-19 treatment,” said the head of scientist.
Another combination is umifenovir with Niclosamide.
Niclosamide is known for its efficacy for Covid treatment but the biggest challenge is high doses needed for maintenance and which leads to side effects.
A safe and efficacious combination of Umifenovir with Niclosamide is being studied and the right dose in combination that can provide positive results, Ravishankar added.
CDRI Director Prof.
Tapas Kundu said, “CDRI works all the time to develop drugs that can help treat all Covid-19 variants other than being economical and safe for people.
We have achieved a major breakthrough with Umifenovir and hopes to develop new drugs to win Pandemic battle.
