NEW DELHI: The Centre has issued an advisory to all states and UTs to recognize and problem ration cards into the most exposed and economically weaker sections of the society to make sure their policy under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
The Centre’s directive comes amid several reports which the poorest of the poor will be in desperate need of foodgrains however they’re not able to procure card.
Addressing a digital press conference, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey stated states and Union territories have range to add policy of 1.97 crore underneath the NFSA.

The ministry requested states and UTs to reach out to vulnerable and weakest segments of the society like road dwellers, rag pickers, hawkers and rickshaw pullers.
The functional duties of identification of qualified persons and families underneath NFSA and issuance of ration cards rest with the states and UTs, ” the announcement said.
States and UTs might be conscious, the advisory stated, that through the present pandemic situation, there are numerous reports/grievances through networking, papers, NGOs and people saying that the weakest and vulnerable sections of this society, that are in desperate need of foodgrains, cannot procure ration cards.
