Pune: Chair of the Serum Institute of India (SII) Cyrus Poonawalla on Friday said he did not support two different Coronavirus vaccines for better efficacy.
Poonawalla, whose company made a Covishield vaccine, spoke to reporters after receiving the Local Local National Award.
“I oppose the mixing of two different vaccines.
No need to mix two different vaccines,” he said, when asked about the recent ICMR study that the cocktails of Covishield and Covaxin could produce better immunity.
“If the cocktail vaccine is given and if the results are not good, then SII can say that another vaccine is not good, on the contrary, other companies might say that because you mix serum vaccines, it doesn’t give the desired results,” said Poonawalla.
.
The efficacy of this approach has not been proven in field trials involving thousands of participants, he added.
A study by the Indian Medical Research Council involving 98 people, 18 of them accidentally received Covishield as the first dose and Covaxin as the second in Uttar Pradesh, showed that combining a better vaccine.
