Panaji: When urging the state government to provide family compensation and farmers affected by immediate flooding, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Goa (GCCI) on Monday asked the Head of the Pramod Sawant Minister to form a task force to find out the reason for the annual flood.
In a letter to Sawant, GCCI said that he was willing to support and collaborate with the government in aid effort.
Industrial agencies have identified short-term steps and long-term steps to prevent similar instances from repeat.
“A task force must be set to assess the reasons for flooding the time of recurring monsoons and excessive damage witnessed over the past few years,” said GCCI President Ralph De Sousa.
Sousa said that GCCI along with government institutions and professional environment experts can help with the report, which must be published to educate and account for all stakeholders.
GCCI said that the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) had to rebuild homes and damage infrastructure in villages.
Along with this “the compensation package that is confirmed” must be given to those who suffer from loss of agricultural equipment, agriculture and significant homes.
Goa witnessed a continuous heavy shower for more than a week that caused flooding, destruction of houses, agricultural plants and livestock.
The government estimates that around 832 hectares of plants and around 700 houses are destroyed.
Support logistics and recovery of supply chains in villages must also, said Sousa.
“Loss of estimates of agricultural products, livestock must be assessed by a neutral task force that can report damage within 45 days,” he said in the letter to Sawant.
As a long-term corrective size, the state needs to dredge waterways and channels, build water highways from the dam to the sea and raise the river embankment where needed.
GCCI also urged the state government to form local disaster management cells in all red zones.
Cells must consist of members who can actively monitor the climax changes and the impacts produced along the Riverfront area and the rainwater of Goa around the dam.
