Guwahati: The local Chandrapur resident has opposed and condemned the shift of city waste disposal sites from Boragon in West Guwahati to the newly selected site in Chandrapur in the eastern outskirts of the city, where most landscapes still have virgins, fearful steps will affect biodiversity regions.
Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Monday started garbage disposal in Chandrapur after the Assam government archive on June 24 requested the Metropolitan Regency Authority to stop the waste disposal on the Borgaon site and use an alternative site in Chandrapur.
The locals demanded protests for 10 hours in Chandrapur on Monday, along with Assam (AASU) student union members, claimed plans to dispose of solid waste produced by the city.
Guwahati City, with more than one million population, produces 550 tons per day solid waste.
The leader of Aasu Tutumani Kalita, who protested since September 2019, said that the demonstration on Monday was part of a series of agitation of dumping which would continue until dumping was not stopped.
“We have written to the main minister and look for intervention as well.
Chandrapur is a popular tourist destination because of its green and geographical location on the edge of Brahmaputra.
We are hard against the disposal of all waste materials from the city.
Waste has destroyed the ecology at the BEEL Deustor and will now pollute Kumbong and Brahmaputra river water, “Kalita said.
