Channel Chickens Add Rain Wisdom in Behala, Kidderpore

Kolkata: Most of the Behala, Haridevpur, Thakurpur and Kidderpore went underwater on Wednesday after rain all night.
These areas received the highest rainfall in Kolkata.
More than 100mm rainfall – 50% of them within two hours of early morning – recorded in these areas.
Even worse, it takes unlimited water to recede as three main outfall channels – Bekor, Manikhali and Churial – everything chokes, very muddy and in some places to catapult by illegal settlers.
All of these areas are susceptible to inundation even if it does not rain.
Behala residents were surprised to see large parts turned into a water body, with large areas under deep or deep water.
According to the Sewerage source and the KMC drainage department, Behala received 112mm rain in 12 hours.
About 50% of this in just two hours.
“Some lowland areas such as Shakuntala Park, Sarsuna, Parernasree, Pathakpara, Motilal Gupta Road and Area Off James Long Sarani recorded heavy rain in a short time.
It causes a puddle of severe water.
Because most of these areas have poor drainage infrastructure, storm water Will take the time to recede, “said a KMC official.
Mahendra Banerjee Road, Unique Park, Kariha, Gopal Mishra Road, Indira Devi Road, Sakher Bazar and Silpara – All under Borough XIII and XIV – No less affected.
Sunirmal Ghosh, a senior citizen and resident of Parnasree, has an urgent appointment with a doctor from DH Road.
Repeat calls to the application taxi do not produce results.
“Even though the appointment was urged, I could not gather the courage to navigate knee water and utilize taxi services from the Parnechere bus holder.
I decided to cancel the appointment.
Now I have to wait for water to recede to visit my doctor,” said Ghosh.
Similarly, some areas of Kidderpore, Mominpur and Ekbalin receive heavy rains, which lead to puddles.
“Mominpore drainage pumping station records 115mm rain in 12 hours,” said KMC official.
Mohammed Aslam, a resident of Ekbalpore Lane, said going with the nature of inundation, it was proven that he had to stay in the room all day.
“I hope the storm will recede at night if it doesn’t rain,” he said.
“We were fed up with Meonon after each bathroom.
Flood water also attacked our room.
We kept complaining, but our complaints seemed to fall on deaf ears.
All channels choked.
Even the KMC once threw out waste into the canal.
Settlements have appeared on their way, stopping Water flow, “said Anubhabh Chatterjee, a resident of Rabindra Nagar.
Storm water from Behala is channeled through the manikhali pump station into Hooghly.
Manikhali can barely drain water because of a commitment.
A RS 700 Crore Drainage Improvement project, which has begun in 2016, must be stopped for land insecurity.
