Chennai: South Railway has decided to only allow people who are vaccinated to travel by suburban trains in the city starting January 10 to the end of the month, given the surge in Covid-19 case.
Book bookings in the UTS mobile application have been suspended because there is no provision for commuting to upload their vaccination certificate in the application.
The suburban train will be operated with a 50% seating capacity, the press release said, adding that people who do not wear masks at the station or train will be fined 500.
Passengers must produce a second dose vaccination certificate along with proof of getting travel tickets and single season.
Those who already have a season ticket must show their certificate if the train staff asks for it.
Only 343 out of a total of 600 daily suburban services will run on Sundays because of the curfew.
Regular commuters are alert that the rules produce vaccination certificates will produce crowding at the ticket counter.
T Sadagopan, a commuter and consumer activist, said, “UTS ticket booking application must have provisions for commuters to upload a vaccine certificate to avoid crowding at the counter.
Now, because the train staff must verify the vaccination certificate for each passenger, this will produce a long queue .
“The train also appealed to passengers to wear masks, maintain social distance and wash their hands regularly at stations and trains.
Source said the train staff and the train police had been ordered to ensure that passengers adhere to the Covid-19 safety protocol at the station and on the train, because people do not wear masks after the hostel train.
