Chennai: For almost 20 women who have undergone most of their lives in the Teynampet slum, this independence day describes freedom in the true sense.
Due to Efforts to Sethu Foundation and Madras Spice Lains Circle 133, women were selected for driving classes for 20 days on August 15, after they were given a job based on the wheel.
Having and driving a car continues to hold the value of aspirational in this country.
But for these women, it is far more – reclamation of clear forces in their homes and their environment in a concrete way.
For Mahadevi, 34, a mother of two, starting to drive a car was a victory struggling after her husband left her and her parents opposed her decision to get out on the field all day.
But in the end he could convince his father and was on his way to become a better driver.
Like Mahadevi, there are other people who are 45 years old, who will return to work after years of marriage, and J Nithya are 34 years old, who hope to get more than he did in the previous show as a help house.
According to Janaki Kannan, the director at the Sethu Foundation, they were in talks with Women of Ladies Circle and the Directorate of Medical Services to appoint their most capable driver for carpool children to school, and ferry employees.
“Our own members will be welcomed and convinced by the idea of having a female driver for our children,” said Yogita Jain, Chair of the Madras Spice Ladies 133 circle, which has sponsored the initiative.
“A week from now on, we also plan to hold workshops on how to use GPS easily while driving.
This is a long-term plan to secure their future,” said Aditi G Shah, project coordinator.
