Chennai: Aai Gears Up to Prevent Floods 2015 Re-Run

Chennai: The Monsoon is an easy month and city airport is ready to prevent strong winds and rain from disturbing flights and prevent flooding runways and taxiways.
A series of steps were being taken after a discussion at a meeting held by the state government with the airport last week to prepare the Monsun, a senior AAI official said.
The airport authorities have begun to conclude the storm waterways in the neighborhood adjacent to the airport, while the Adyar river desilalates near the second runway bridge is almost complete.
A senior AAI official said that the area lying near the runway was leveled, leaves on the base strip of the runway and taxiways had been trimmed.
Apart from this, the ground staff and airline staff have been told to tie light materials and also land handling equipment such as trolleys, pushback vehicles, stairs and others to prevent them involved in strong winds.
The staff has been recognized to ensure small aircraft moorings too.
The lights on the runway and taxis have been checked and repaired.
The airport also installed a high pressure water pump.
“Extraordinary intense rain like in Delhi can cause complexity.
But the steps taken will ensure that the impact includes delays can be minimal,” airline officials said.
In addition, the airport will also notify pilots and airlines to expect low visibility and follow the procedure to fly during the rainy weather.
AAI has ensured the river desilting near the bridge after the 2015 flood.
Compound wall has been raised to prevent river water from entering the airport campus.
Most of the pre-monsoon preparedness work was carried out last year too.
