Chennai: The Chennai Airport Flyover in Meenambakkam is ready to get a new lights next week.
After the request was placed by the Chennai traffic police greater because installing lights on firover quoted the problem of safety, the National Highway Authority (NHAI) sanctioned 20 lights to be installed.
The Flyover has no light since the inauguration.
Stretch stays dark at night, only illuminated by high file car lights.
The Flyover Airport Chennai is a three-way three lanes for one-way traffic from Pallavaram to Alandur.
It was built by NHAI with a cost of ₹ 98 crore and was inaugurated in 2008.
It was built to facilitate congestion at the Grand Southern Trunk Road.
Police sources say that the installation of lights is a long-term demand for motorists, which find it difficult to cross stretches while late at night.
Officials said that lights could not be installed as far as high pole lights would hamper flight movements, because it was very close to the airport.
“We have planned to install dim lights with minimal heights, so they do not affect aircraft operations at the airport,” said a highway official.
“It has been done after consulting with police and airport officials.
Although not many accidents have occurred on the flyover, these lights will prevent accidents from happening,” said a senior traffic official from the St Thomas Traffic Wing Mount.
“This is a welcome step.
Even though the airport is quite bright, senior citizens find it difficult to drive in the dark,” said Padmanaban, a resident of Nanganallur.
