Chennai Airport: Planning to Increase Aircraft Handling Capacity

Chennai: India Airport Authority (AAI) plans to form the state government committee and defense officials to obtain land to increase aircraft handling capacity at Chennai Airport.
Chennai Airport has requested the Tamil Nadu government for 93.04 acres of land to establish a lamp approach, building hanger, parallel taxi lines, new drain channels for flood security, for safety.
The airport also asked 7.76 hectares of land from the Academy Training Officer (OTA) to install paint 1 light approach to the runway.
Suggestions for the Committee for land acquisition emerged during the Airport Advisory Committee (AAC) meeting held on Monday.
Chairman AAC T Balu MP has suggested forming a committee “consisting of officials from income (state), defense, civil bodies and AAI for intentional about the progress of the acquisition of land parcels and follow up with the state government to forward it.” Sharad Kumar Airport Director said, “The land is needed for airport capacity to increase.” In a statement, AAI said the land was needed because “in consentance with increased terminal capacity, air work is also ongoing to meet the demand and land bag that has been identified and needed to be obtained for further development.” The ongoing modernization work will increase the airport passenger capacity to 35 million passengers per year with current capacity of 17 million passengers per year.
The committee also decided to form an action plan to remove the barrier on the path of approach to the second foundation so that larger aircraft can use the foundation.
The airport will also coordinate with Greater Chennai Corporation, the Pantonment Board and the Administration of the Chengalpet District to change the method of waste disposal in the neighborhood around the airport campus to prevent bird barrier incidents.
Not regulated garbage disposal that attracts birds is to rise to the risk of aircraft.
The airport director said the disposal through the Pammal Uncle area under the main runway was the cause of worries from a security point of view and because large waste entered the airport campus which could damage the instrument landing system (ILS).
PWD is working on a plan to switch drain through Cowl Bazaar.
