Chennai: All road work stops poor quality bitumen

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation has stopped all road work in the city after some violations including poor quality bitumen found in more than 20 locations.
In the past week, after a series of meetings with the Project Management Consultant (PMC), a test in nearly 20 sites where the road is being placed in the mixture (bitumen) not in accordance with the standards of Indian road congresses and tender corporation specifications.
And spot attacks at 54 locations found the quality of the bitumen on the road that had been placed with inferior quality and the road did not have the necessary density.
Even for the Nagar Skywalk project, the report said the rod used did not have an anti-corrosive coat.
In many places, the bitumen was falsified, the temperature did not reach 160 degrees needed and the size of the gravel was not in accordance with the specifications.
In some places, the composition of bitumen and gravel is incorrect; In the others, the bitumen content itself is not enough.
Now, the Civic body will make a mandatory bitumen purchase invoice.
Some consultants told TII they realized poor quality but according to them often threatened.
They said the report was delivered from at least 54 locations.
A senior company official said the role of PMCS did not begin until the road work was finished.
“In the past week, after we tightened the grip on quality, these companies sent reports.
Each PMC should test the material on the site where it was prepared, on the site where it was poured and also after completion.
But at 2,000 strange roads placed in a few years Finally, there were no reports as it was documented.
We held a meeting with all PMC on Saturday.
“Other officials said they were considering removing PMC because they did not fulfill their role.
“Now they send 54 reports but why did they not test the material on the site and while it was put? The PMC concept was made because the engineer could not go to the site to test.
But if PMCS colluded with the contractor, and don’t mark red work, there’s no point in having it.
“Now, a system is being placed in a place of engineer and PMCS must submit a pouring card, site card and extraction card to the company immediately, not after the road work is complete.
Corporate commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi has requested officials and consultants to test the material and check the road placed in the past six months, they are placed in the future.
“This is to ensure the same loss does not occur.
Poor quality roads should not be placed and the road being placed now must meet all the specified standards,” said S Rajendiran, Chief Engineer (road interior and bus routes).
