As the city continues to experience heavy rainfall on Monday, the animal welfare activists are busy doing rescue, animal rescue stranded and set up a hotline for help.
Arun Prasanna, founder, those for livestock in India (PFCI) said volunteers busy since Sunday.
“On Monday, we rescued three dogs were abandoned in Kovilambakkam.
They have been tied to a portable generator on the street,” he said, adding that pets are then returned to the owner.
“Haunted by the memories flood in 2015, people panic and move to a safer location, to leave their pets.
In Mambalam West, someone left their dog in the street and someone warn us so we can save it.” Dawn Williams, General Manager, Blue Cross of India, said the helpline they kept buzzing.
“On Sunday, we went by ship to Korattur to rescue a dog from an old building that partially collapsed.
And on Monday we save a cow in Madipakkam who had been stranded on a small plot of land, surrounded by water,” he said.
Activist Animal Welfare Dinesh Baba had got the call about puppies abandoned newborn.
“A lot of puppies have been abandoned in the street and nearby landfills and people called us for help,” he said.
Activists also maintain a veterinarian, volunteer, boats and supplies ready in case the situation worsens.
“If it rains for a few days, then a few areas in South and North Chennai will be greatly affected.
So we have to save and rescue kit boat ready,” said Dinesh.
Meanwhile, activists appealing to the people to bring their animals with them, and if that is not possible, at least let them not dressed so that they can move to higher land.
“You can call the helpline or let an animal shelter in the complex and give them a safe dry place and food,” Arun said, adding that they have sent food bags, bread and metal cots to some animal shelters.
“We also tried to find a bed of metal.
Because the floor is usually humid or damaged by water, the dog can sleep on the couch.” With that ran the shelter is full, they need rice, old newspapers, jute bags etc to rescue animals.
“We are looking for animal feed, dog food, old sheets, old newspapers, and jute bags for the animals,” says Dawn.
