Chennai: College engineering is looking for a separate two-week window to conduct bridge courses for first year students, who have attended the majority of their classes online because of the ongoing pandemic.
Even in normal years, first year students usually struggle in math paper techniques when they start learning advanced mathematics.
Because of this, colleges want to refresh their basic concepts in mathematics and physics before starting regular courses for batch 2021-22.
Professional self-financing consortium, art and science in Tamil Nadu plans to provide representation to Anna University and the Department of Higher Education who seek to conduct this bridge course in physical mode.
“Because the online class in class XII, the first year students will need a short course about mathematics and basic physics.
If students are not strong in mathematics and physics, the technical syllabus is difficult for them,” said RM Kishore, Deputy Chairperson of RMK Engineering College in Chennai.
Semester for college engineering consists of 450 class hours.
Regular semesters will not have enough time to complete the technical syllabus.
So college may require a window two weeks before the start of the semester.
Aicte gives 10 days to do human value classes.
For this academic year, universities can be allowed to use this time to do bridge courses, he added.
V E Annamalai, the Principal of the SSN College of Engineering in Chennai, said without the council test, students may not be ready last year.
Bridge courses can be used to refresh students on the basic concepts and prepare them for technical courses.
“Given the prolonged online class last year, the course of the bridge is the need for hours,” said K Maran, Director of Sri Sairam Engineering College in Chennai.
