Chennai: Chicken prices at Rs 280 / kg, Onions too Dearer

Chennai: The price of broiler chicken has surged again with 1 kg of meat in retail stores for 240 to 280 depending on the location.
This is a second surge in a month after the price of chicken skyrocketed up to 300 in July.
The price of mutton, however, remains stable, while the cost of vegetables such as onions and tomatoes increases.
Stakeholders blame the surge in chicken prices in inadequate supply.
The Association of Chennai Poultry Dealer President T D Chandrasekhar said the daily demand was around 5 lakh kg in Chennai and the suburbs covering a distance of 40 km.
“But, we only get 3.5 lakh kg every day at this time.
Only 10 days ago, the cost of chicken was 180 / kg.
It has soared now because of a short supply,” he said.
Sources of Broiler Chicken City are mostly from Chittoor in the Andhra Pradesh District and Coimbatore, Vellore and Villupuram.
Meanwhile, the price of mutton is stable at 800 / kg.
South Chennai Mutton Association Traders Secretary General Kareem said the supply of meat and stable demand had ensured prices that had not surged.
However, the price of some vegetables has soared.
The cost of onions and tomatoes increased 5 to 10 per kg in the neighborhood market compared to last week.
While onions are sold for 40 / kg, tomatoes are worth 27 to 30 per kg in various regions in Chennai.
