Chennai: Police police who drove a friend of a friend crashed into an old man sitting outside his home in Virugambakkam on Sunday night, killing him in place.
A test found that the police, Ranjith Kumar, 32, from Alwarthhirunagar were not drunk at the time.
The wing of the Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation recorded him for causing death from negligence and driving rash and driving in a public way.
Ranjith Kumar, which was attached to Wing crime at the police station JJ Nagar, is currently a shooter of commissioners with the North Zone (traffic).
On Sunday, he borrowed Toyota Innova and with another friend, Manikandan 27 years old, he left to meet a friend.
At Devi Karumariam Coil Street in Virugumbakkam, he lost control of the vehicle when he suddenly turned to avoid hitting some children who had rushed out of the temple that holds prasadam in their hands.
He then crashed into Shankar, 67, who sat outside his home to eat prasadam.
The police said it was a narrow and difficult road for him to negotiate stretches.
Shankar, who fell on the ground, died at a place after maintaining a severe head injury.
Some of the residents of the area, who heard the voice, gathered in that place and stopped Ranjith Kumar from continuing further.
They tried to hit him when he told them that he was a police officer.
Residents assume the police are under the influence of alcohol and warn the police.
A police team investigating Pondy Bazaar traffic arrived at the place and the police experienced a test to find out if he was drunk.
After that it was revealed that he was not drunk, he was ordered under the relevant parts of the IPC and arrested.
A witness then told the police that Shankar came out of the temple just five minutes before the accident with Prasadam.
Many in this area usually sit outside their homes at night for fresh air, he said.
