Chennai: Crackdown encourages the use of helmets between bikers

Chennai: Hard action and awareness by traffic police encouraged the use of helmets among Twowheelers riders in the city from 72% to 86% between June and August.
A study in June found that only 72% was a used helmet.
This study was conducted after analysis of road accidents in the city between January 1 and September 7 this year.
The analysis shows that of the 659 people who died and 3,325 were injured in accidents in the city, two-wheeled users formed 26% (173 people) from death and 37% (1,214) injured.
And 126 (74%) of 173 who died and 1,056 (86%) of 1,214 were injured not wearing a helmet.
So a study of compliance with helmet rules was carried out in June at the intersection where the vehicle population was more like Pallikarani, Kathipara, Mountain Road and Tambaram.
It was found that only 72% of two-wheeled riders wore helmets.
To increase compliance, the police conduct consciousness campaigns and law enforcement drives.
In August 3,58,548 cases were booked by traffic police, 1.29,240 cases not to wear helmets.
The second survey in August found compliance has increased to 86%.
