Chennai: Most cities noted soaking at the groudnwater level in June compared to May.
With the exception of Tiruvottiyur and Royapuram, all other zones record a drop.
Madhavaram reported a maximum decline of around 0.83m in June.
Metrowater makes records of water level every day using digital ground water level recorders.
An official said the level in Tiruvottiyur and Royapuram could remain at the same level as the recorder was placed close to the beach and therefore the level was usually good in this field.
If someone goes further to the west in the same area, someone must dig deeper for ground water.
In areas such as the Arjamanur, which has clay land, followed by sand and flakes, residents must attract water from superficial aquifers during the months of the monsoon and from deeper aquifiers during the summer.
It will ensure that the locals get groundwater supply throughout the year and also help recharge ground water tables, the official said.
Hydrogeologist J Saravanan said the city ground water table was in a good position.
“I used to get a call every month of May and June to dig new Borewell, if it’s long to dry out.
But this year so far, I haven’t received many calls in this matter,” he said.
Recently in Pallavaram, his team dug well and found that water is available at a depth of only 40ft.
In most residential areas, the existing bore well produces water.
This clearly shows that the depletion of ground water tables is very marginal in most cities, he added.
