Chennai: “Super Glue” which was injected by the doctor into the sakthi brain two days it helped neonates recover from rare brain conditions, Galen malformation veins which usually slowed blood flow from high pressure arteries into low pressure veins.
Without capillaries, blood flows into the vein, causing them to develop.
This extra pressure in the vein causes congestive heart failure in Sakaki.
The doctor at the Apollo Hospital, who knew about his condition even before shipping, performed a procedure called ’embolization’ to close the malformation with special glue, causing blood vessels to disappear and let blood flow normally.
“Glue is sent to malformation through a catheter (tube) through the umbilical artery to the brain,” said Senior Surgeon Dr.
Srinivasan Paramasivam, who heads the hospital neuro-endovascular operations.
After the procedure, the glue closes the malformation, causing an enlarged vein to finally disappear and allow blood to flow to the normal vessel at normal pressure.
The procedure, said Dr.
Paramasivam, is not new, but it is very rare – seen in 1 of 3 million births.
On Wednesday, the doctor said, Sakthi had recovered well after the procedure.
However, he will continue to be monitored by a doctor for several months.
