Chennai: Traffic on the Poonamallee High Road (EVR Silai) artery has been beaten badly, especially during rush hour, because the state highway department that builds the culverts to allow rainwater flow during the rainy season.
As a result of the road exploring the project, which involves culverts on three main jambs, vehicles from the Central Chennai train station cannot proceed directly to Kilpukuk, AminjiBarai and Anna Nagar.
They must turn left to the Gandhi Irwin Road bridge and turn right at the next intersection to continue further.
The stalled stretch became chaotic during rush hour when the driver of Chennai Central was asked to take a detour.
“Even though it is an extra KMA trip, it is unavoidable.
By working at the intersection at Gandhi Irwin Road, now it has smoothed a little,” Srinivasan said, a driver of Kilpuk.
A senior police officer said the work had to be done all the time because the traffic at the main intersection could not remain disturbed for more than a week.
Jobs will be completed in three days and traffic will be continued, he said.
By working at the Ritingdon Road and Vepery are expected to begin next week, the police are studying the pattern of traffic to take steps to ensure that disruption to motorists and other road users is minimal.
A senior official from the highway department, who put the culverts on the opposite of the new police commissioner, said Metrowater’s work to solve the pipe that passed the location completed on Monday before they could start working on Tuesday.
The other two will be placed at the intersection with Gandhi-Irwin Road and intersections with the Ritingdon Road.
The places identified for three culvises, which will carry storm water to the coout river, are spotted spots for stagnation of water, especially during the rainy season.
The culverts across the office of the police commissioner will be 26 meters long.
The state highway department will take two days to put every culverts and six days to complete the entire job, the official said.
