Chennai: After years of corruption, collusion, and roads quickly damaged, Chennaiites was finally able to enjoy a fluent vehicle on the road that was not worn out in the first rain spell.
So far, after the flood in 2021, 803 roads have been placed.
This is not only good quality but is placed according to all specifications detailed in the tender document and according to the specifications of the Indian road congress, the peak body which sets the criteria for the work.
And, 853 better roads will be placed in the coming month, Greater Chennai Corporation promises quality bitumen, road thickness, grinding, compaction and new mixture of road mixture are some of the main parameters for good roads.
This is not only ignored, but rarely tested in the past.
The process is damaged by corruption and deviations such as reducing the quantity of bitumen, the use of falsified bitumen and irregularities on the slopes of the road from the center to the corner.
Now, the corporation has ended this free shipping to the contractor and introduces checks at each process level.
Shiv City Administration Secretary Das Meena told TI that the assistant engineer or executive engineer is now always on the site.
“We ensure that the road throughout the state is placed according to specifications.
In Chennai, another check layer (has been introduced) in the form of an IAS official for each zone,” he said.
Chennai Commissioner Corporation Gagandeep Singh Bedi said that every engineer was given a detailed list to check such as milling depth, application tack coat, mixture of road, temperature, camber of the road and compaction.
“Senior officials check these streets every night and check check out the details (engineers) entered,” he said.
The contractor must attend a meeting with specifications with designated IAS officials before the road is placed.
Jayaram Venkatsan from Arappor Iakkam said many roads were put before the flood win in a few weeks.
“We also need to improve accountability in cases of irregularities in Chennai.
Changes must be in terms of policy not only in Chennai Corporation but also in other departments such as highways and other urban local objects,” he said.
There are 471 bus routes and 33,374 interior roads.

“Because of the lack of coordination between departments, good roads can be explored or illegally by the Department or other tele-communication operators.
The public must be empowered to increase this problem,” said G Sathish, a resident.
In response, Meena said the authorities had ensured that the work list was obtained from all departments ahead of the road laying process.
“For example, in Nagercoil, the water scheme work is happening so we will only patch the road,” he said.
Corporate contractors say Camber’s correction is still not done correctly.
“The slope of the road is the main reason for flooding in the city and it must be checked before the road is placed and corrected in the location where the road height increased for years as in T Nagar, Ashok Nagar and West Mambalam,” said the contractor.
