Chennai: Chennai Greater Officials Corporation have issued a flood alert and evacuated several people living in Manali Pudhu Nagar, Idayanchavadi, Naappalayam and Sadayankuppam in the upstream of the Kosasthalayar River.
Excess water from Poondi Reservoir flows into Bengal Bay through this stretch which has several residential areas.
The Public Works Department has been on Friday night to release water on 37,861 cubic feet per second (cusecs) from the Poondi reservoir.
The level of inflows for this reservoir is 42,420 cusecs, which are the highest several times.

People evacuated have been located in the nearest community room and school.
A senior PWD engineer said that the current influx of Poondi increased due to heavy rains in neighboring Andhra Pradesh had filled his reservoir in Nandhi, Nagari, Lava Kucha, Ammapalli and Kesavaram.
And, the water from this reservoir flows into the Poondi water catchment area.
In addition, nearly 8,000 rainwater cusecs from the forest area in Andhra Pradesh side by side with Tamil Nadu also flowed into the Pondi reservoir water catchment area.
On Friday night, reading showed that PoDi reservoir storage was 89.4%.
The full capacity of the reservoir is 3,231 million cubic feet (MCFT) water and on Friday storage is 2,888 MCFT.
Red Hills reservoir storage is 81.5%.
The capacity of 3,300 MCFT and storage is 2,688 MCFT.
Chembarambakkam has 2,779 MCFT, which is 76.2% of the total capacity of 3,645 MCFT, said an official.
