Chennai: A 51-year-old man from Bharathi Nagar in Villivakkam was arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing 25 cameras, worth several Lakh Rupees, from photographers in the wedding room for six years.
The man, identified as Samsudien, went to the wedding room disguised as a guest and the camera stole when the photographer left them unattended.
Samsudeen uses a bicycle for his trip to the hall to make it appear that he is a local person and to avoid identifying through the registration number.
Police said many photographers, who lost their cameras thus, had taken problems on social media.
Based on orders from Police Commissioner Chennai Shankar Jiwal, a special team headed by deputy commissioner (Kilparuk) K Karthikeyan was formed to investigate this case.
During the investigation, the police chief Saravana Kumar and Rajesh and Constable Maheshwaran, who went through CCTV footage from Villivakkam, watched a man pedaling a bicycle with a white mudguard.
On Sunday, the same personnel found the man on a bicycle while they sipped tea in a shop in Villivakkam.
Feeling something wrong, the police followed him and held him when he tried to enter the wedding hall.
The police said Samsudeen was an alcoholic.
“He waited until the photographers were called to have food.
Especially the camera picked him up a lot of money,” said an officer.
He targeted the wedding room in fields such as ICF, Mylapore, Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, Ibathur, Avadi and Nazarathpet.
He sells cameras to the broker and spend money on alcohol, according to the police.
