Chennai: Koyambedu Fruit and Vegetable Market, one of the largest facilities in Asia, has made a decision to stop using a disposable plastic bag from October 2.
The main secretary, environment and forest, Supriya Sahu tweeting this information after the function with traders.
Large Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi was also present.
Sahu is also the Chairperson of the TN pollution control body.
The corporation is a competent authority that enforces plastic prohibitions in the city.
Bedi told Ti that they had advised traders to use only paper and gunny bags.
A series of meetings have been carried out with traders and plastic bag manufacturers about this.
NGOs provide fabric bags for today’s functions.
“The Zonal GCC team will enforce a plastic ban.
We will initially use persuasion, not a fine,” said Bedi.
According to official data, the GCC confiscated 2173 kg of plastic and imposed RS 5.54 lakh smile in August.
The seizure was reduced to 488 kg and smooth until Rs 1.01 lakh in September.
During the meeting, Sahu said, “Every week, we eat microplastics which is equivalent to credit card weight.
This is why we need to move to a cloth (yellow cloth) bag,” he said.
