Chennai Man runs with 5 kidneys after the 3rd transplantation

Chennai: A 41-year-old man who underwent a third kidney transplant, walked out of the hospital with five kidneys.
On Tuesday, after his first set of postoperative examination, the surgeon at Madras Medical Mission said he recovered well.
The transplant team also said they are now convinced that the third kidney transplant is a valid therapeutic choice for certain patients.
In 1994, when patients were 14 years old, his kidney failed, pushing his first transplantation which lasted nine years.
The second was in 2005 and functional for 12 years.
But, for the next four years, he must be tied to a dialysis machine almost three times a week.
In patients with chronic kidney disorders, the kidney stops filtering body waste through urine.
When diseases develop, kidney function is taken over by a dialysis machine.
“His first transplant and the second failed because of the uncontrolled hypertension.
To complicate many things, he underwent a triple bypass surgery to repair the block in the heart in March at our hospital,” said Transplant Surgeon Dr.
Saravanan.
Even though the best choice doctor can offer transplants, complex procedures.
First, the patient has two original kidneys and two donor kidneys on his body.
Now the doctor must find a room for the fifth.
“Connecting them with blood vessels is even more challenging.
With four dysfunctional kidneys, almost no width left in the arteries or veins,” he said.
Transplant surgeons do not eliminate dysfunctional kidneys to make space because of the risk of large bleeding.
“When it happens, patients will need blood transfusions.
This can lead to antibody production that can cause new kidney refusal,” Saravanan said.
During the operation on July 10, the team decided to put the kidney close to the intestine and connect blood vessels closer to the arteries and heart veins.
The kidney artery is connected to the point of aortic bifurcation and kidney veins related to inferior vena cava (the largest vein that goes into the heart).
“This transperitoneal approach (through the intestine) is rarely done,” he said.
The doctor said that they would continue to monitor his conditions for several more months to ensure the immune system did not fight new organs or blood pressure did not cause problems once again.
