Chennai: Migrating birds began to arrive at Marshlands

Chennai: Chennai bird observer prepares to spend this weekend in birding spots such as Pallikarani Marshland, Perumbakkam Wetlands, Kovalamam Creek and Pulicat Lake.
With the arrival of a good number of birds, this year’s migration season has begun.
In each of these locations can see a minimum of 60 species of birds, according to bird observers.
Warden Wildlife Chennai E Prasant said he visited Lake Pulikat in the first week of this month.
“On that day, I could not see migratory birds.
I can only see some local birds.
However, information has come that migration birds have begun to come in a good amount,” he said.
Founder of Nature Trust, K v R K TireRanan, who monitors migration birds in four locations say Palikarani has around 100 species of migration birds.
It was followed by 80 species in the Kovalam Creek area, 60 in Pulusik, and 50 in Perumbakkam.
He said the migratory birds had begun to arrive in these four locations since the first week of this month.
At present, Pallikarai has 6,000 birds, 2,500 in Kovalam, 1,200 in Pulusat and 500 in Perumbakam.
Perumbakkam wetland material attracts many species of ducks.
This time only a small number of them so far.
It is more expected to come up with the beginning of winter.
Many duck species fly several thousand kilometers from places such as Siberia, Russia and the Tundra area, he said.
Lapwing gray-headed, Marsh Barat Harrier, Firdaus Flycatcher, Brown Shrike, Less Black Gull, Walltail White, Avocet Pied, Catcher Oysters and Terek Sandpiper are some migration birds that can be accommodated in four locations.
In Perumbakkam, some rare forest birds have arrived and the migratory birds have not yet come to this location, a forest official said.
