Chennai: ‘Move a dump further from Lake Thalambur’

Chennai: Residents of Thalambur Village in the southern outskirts of Chennai urged Chengalpet collectors to ensure that the dump page on the 50-cents plot was at least 200 billion away from the Eponymous Green Tribunal Guidelines (NGT).
Local residents, who have been grouped under the Action Committee of Thalambur residents, filed a petition last month in this case with collectors and quoted the rules of solid waste management, 2016, to direct their requests.
The village is located about 2 km from East Coast Road and is near the Special Economic Zone of ShollingAlurur (SEZ), which is one of the largest in the country.
This area is decorated with several gated communities, residents who work in nearby IT companies.
Authorities allocate a plot of 50 cents for dump while moved from the previous place.
It was fenced in the side facing Jalan Karanai to prevent the entry of private vehicles that dispose of garbage there.
At the present location, rain water can release through the garbage on the page so that it pollutes ground water and causes the danger to migratory birds who visited the place, said n anbuvahini, a citizen who is part of the committee.
Residents added that the burning of non-feather garbage was the main problem.
A senior official from the Administration Chengalpet said the Rahul Nadh collector was scheduled to visit Thalambur on Monday and would see this problem.
Residents also raise sand mining indiscriminately in locations and nearby areas, which have allowed easy paths for garbage to flow to the lake.
“We are worried that this will seep into ground water and finally our drinking water will be contaminated,” said Anbuvahini.
Local Panchayat officials did not respond to their petitions and complaints about sand mining, he said, added, “there was no verification of land done.” Residents demand the proper separation of waste and disposal techniques.
Follow-up revealed that the agency contracted by the local body to help these things had not started work and only the signature they were taken to attend before NGT, Anbuvahini said.
