Chennai: Penalty for Livestock Threats to Cut

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation has planned to reduce the penalty gathered for livestock threats this month since statistics show that the problem is being examined.
In addition to this, small political parties and organistations make representations to the recent GCC, asking reducing the number of penalties.
At present, the GCC collects Rs 10,750 from livestock owners found roaming the streets.
This has proposed to reduce this to Rs 1,550 after receiving representation of representatives of small political parties.
Under GCC rules, cattle herders are not allowed within city limits for inhibiting the flow of traffic.
Officials have provisions to confiscate livestock and store them in a safe house until the owner pays a fine.
The GCC has climbed a good amount of Rs 1,550 to RS 10,750 on April 1, 2018.
Because of this, the number of livestock seized fell far from 1,622 in 2019-20 to 642.
Further reduced to 280 at 2020-21, GCC said.
Most of these cases were booked in various fields such as Triplicane in Central Chennai and in outside areas such as Bachelor and Alandur.
Smaller political parties and organizations such as the Samajwadi Party, Gokul Majakal Katchi, the Herder Association of Yadavar Cow, Mr.
Yadava Mahasabha, and TN Yadava Sangam submitted a petition, companies recently requested a reduction in penalties.
GCC officials said they also faced legal and order problems when the staff seized cattle as they were protested by the owner.
“This is the reason why the penalty reduction has been proposed,” said an official.
However, if livestock is confiscated from now on, the owner, who usually get a permit from local GCC health officials for his release, must get the same letter from the local police too.
