Chennai: City police have received an X-Ray scanner installed in the vehicle to make luggage checks during VVIP visits faster.
The engine, purchased at a cost of RS 33 Lakh by the state government, is more advanced that currently used at the airport and the highest highest places, said sources in the department.
The vehicle was handed over to the city police on Friday and officers including Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal was identified by its features.
Chennai City Additional Commissioner of Police Headquarters, J Loganathan, North Chennai Senthilkumar was present at the office of the commissioner.
The clerk said the vehicle would be useful during the bandobust because the guest luggage visiting Vvips could be checked in a few minutes.
At present, police officers physically inspect VVIP items, their guests and other visitors.
Chennai has many prominent visitors, President of RAM Nath Kovind, Venkaiiah Naidu’s vice president has visited the city in the past month.
Security officials accompanying the Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Chennai in October 2019 had brought equipment installed by similar vehicles from China along with their convoys, said sources in the department.
“This special scanner model has several advanced features, including internal storage of scanned articles,” said an officer.
