Chennai: Pulianthope to make RS 7CR Storm Drains

Chennai: City Corporation on Sunday announced it would build a new storm water channel in the North Chennai Pulianthope area, one of the worst affected by the rain recently with the water which stagnates for days, around 7.1 crores.
Officials said the previous water channel, connecting to Gandhi canal could only handle 2cm-3cm rain.
In November, around 20cm of rain were recorded in six hours which caused severe inundation.
“The new drains are being built on the Pulianthope High Road, Demmelows Road and Decaster Road with a higher carrying capacity.
They will be built in concrete and will be a model that is open and close,” said a larger Chennai Corporation official.
Officials say the existing waterways are bricks and mortars and also have waste relations in many places.
“New and concurrent concern and lid, it will be easy to de-silt,” said one.
Officials from the Ministry of Drain Water Storm said they had taken surveys throughout the city and that all damaged networks would be repaired or replaced in time.
The proposed wrinkles tend to be 1.5 meters wide and inside and will be connected to the Gandhi channel too.
“The next main focus is with waterways in the mambalam area.
Improving the waterways in Nagar will also take place,” he said.
Civil Activists David Manohar said this is one of the larger storm water disposal projects initiated, accountability must be placed on selected contractors from the start.
“Image of the proposed storm drainage must be placed in the public domain and public feedback must be taken into account,” he said.
He said there were various GIS experts who could share their opinions if the corporation allowed it.
“People will see a serious storm disposal problem after a recent inundation.”
